London 7/7 Bombings
Terrorism arrived on Britain’s doorstep when four bombs exploded on London’s public transport system on 7 July 2005, killing 56 people and injuring many more. The attacks were quickly linked to Al-Qaeda but doubt remains over exactly who was behind these atrocities.
Three bombs were detonated within less than a minute of each other on three London Underground trains during the morning rush hour, resulting in a significant number of fatalities and injuries, while a fourth was set off almost an hour later on a double-decker bus in Tavistock Square.
It was widely reported following the attacks that responsibility lay with four Islamist suicide bombers, all of British descent, who sought reprisals on the British people for the country’s involvement in the Iraq war. The nation was dumbfounded and it didn’t take long for the media to infer a link to Al-Qaeda.
However, as time has passed and new details have emerged, the official version of events has been increasingly questioned. Some theorists believe that the bombings were orchestrated by the British intelligence services as a means of generating greater support for the war in Iraq.
These people point towards the fact that there is alleged evidence showing that the bombs were placed under the tube trains and not detonated from inside. One eyewitness is supposed to have been told to mind a hole where the bomb had been – the floor of the train had been pushed up and fractured, suggesting a massive force from below.
Special access to the Underground system would have been required to position the explosives and it is highly unlikely that the accused men would have been able to secure such admission. Were the suicide bombers just patsies set up to take the fall?
Then there are claims that the British government used an anti-terrorist attack training exercise as cover to carry out the bombings. It is alleged that a UK crisis management company with links to the British state was running a training exercise in London that morning to test drills relating to terrorist attacks on the city, and that the British Intelligence services used it as means of conducting its more sinister operation.
And what should be made of the fact that pristine identification documents belonging to the suicide bombers were found amid the wreckage? How could they have survived the blasts? Were they planted by MI5 agents after the event?
Theorists also point with suspicion to the fact that the British government announced that the bombers had travelled into London from Luton on a train that was actually cancelled. Had the plotters slipped up? Why were the CCTV cameras on the bus not working? Why did then Israeli Finance Minister Benjamin Netanyahu decide to cancel a journey through one of the areas that would be bombed on that morning? Did MI5 forewarn the Israeli Secret Service Mossad about the bombings?
Others believe that the CIA carried out the bombings for financial gain. A lot of money was made on the stock exchange following the attacks, with individuals profiting from short-selling the British pound.
